Barbara Vickers offers Civil War Dolls, Papers, Prints and Maps. Barbara hand makes black-and-white Topsy-Turvy Dolls, which can be purchased at her permanent Market locations in building A, booths 23 and 24. The Topsy-Turvy Dolls originated in the Antebellum South before and during the Civil War. The dolls were historically made by black women and children. Because the dolls have a black and white side, the slave children would flip their dolls to the black side when an overseer or plantation owner appeared.
This style of basket was originally made to winnow rice on local plantations. Today, sweetgrass baskets are works of art and highly sought after souvenirs.
