Sweetgrass basket sewing was an important tradition among African-Americans on Lowcountry plantations. Flat sweetgrass “fan-style” baskets were used during harvest season to separate rice from chaff. Today, the art of sweetgrass basket sewing is alive and thriving at the Charleston City Market, one of the oldest public markets in America.
This style of basket was originally made to winnow rice on local plantations. Today, sweetgrass baskets are works of art and highly sought after souvenirs.
